It would seem that  hacker are getting their hands on WhatsApp’s verification codes.

There is a group of scammers posing as relatives and friends asking for verification codes, which they ‘accidentally’ sent to somebody else’s phone number.

These codes are required when you are signing or creating a new account on a different telephone.

That itself should seem dodgy, but we would think nothing of it because we believe they’re family and friends in need.

Talking to Dark Web Magazine, Tan said that he had been contacted one day by a friend asking to ship over the verification code. The ‘friend’ told him that he entered Tan’s number.

Tan, who thought nothing of it, delivered the verification code within seconds, was locked out of his account.

Twenty-four hours after sending a report to WhatsApp, Tan retrieved his account, but it was already too late by then. The hackers sent messages to his contacts, asking them for their verification numbers.

Tan stated, “I began panicking and tried to log back in, but I ended up competing (virtually) with the hacker for management of this account.”

Occasionally these hackers would get into contact with someone you are close with and even request money. The hackers could also see your work-related messages and market this info on the dark web or competitions.

However, this isn’t an old issue. The Singapore Police Force has warned citizens of those scams since it’s been occurring for the last couple of decades.

The police force had also published a statement in February 2020 stating that there have been 18 reports with exactly the identical issue reported as of December 2019. The amount might be as there are those people who have fallen prey to this scam but haven’t reported it.

Should you ever end up in such a circumstance, it is best to call first to confirm. In any event, avoid entering another individual’s amount when verifying your WhatsApp account.
